Fremont Middle School - Principal Notes

4/21/08  Organizations & individuals wanted who might be interested in helping out with this worthwhile project to clean up the Nature Center behind the MS...

We hope you can join us for a national day of volunteering sponsored by America’s fraternal benefit societies. This is your chance to reach out to your community and across generations, to make a difference in Fremont!

On Saturday, May 3rd from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. we will rejuvenate the Nature Center located behind the Fremont Middle School!  The walking trails need to be cleared of brush and weeds and the walking bridges need to be shored up as well.

We encourage young people AND adults to join together and share this experience. Snacks and drinks will be provided.  For information or to sign up your group, please call Koni Howell at 924-0432.

With yesterday and today as “snow days”, I have had a chance to get some quiet time at work!  Report cards were scheduled to be mailed yesterday, but because of the snow days, will go out tomorrow.  The current newsletter is included in the mailing, so please take a few moments to read.  Our parent/teacher conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday, February 18 and 19 from 3:30-8:00 p.m.  With traveling teachers, there will be a few exceptions to this time.  If the time is different, your child’s teacher will let you know their availability.  A reminder, also, that February 11 is an early release day (12:55 dismissal for the middle school students.

Happy New Year!  I hope that you had a chance to relax and enjoy time with family and friends over the holiday season.  We had a nice surprise yesterday when Lance Corporal Curt Smalligan stopped in for a short visit before going back to Hawaii.  He anticipates another tour to Iraq later this year.   Thank you to Curt and all of our former students who are now serving our country.

The injured student underwent successful surgery yesterday and is now recuperating at home.  Thanks to those who expressed concern for him.

We have a young man who will be undergoing surgery after the first of the year due to an injury when he and another student collided in the bus parking lot.  We want everyone to be safe, so we ask that students not run around and/or throw snowballs. Although a snowball was thrown in this incident, that did not cause the injury.  However, we do follow the handbook rules of an automatic after school detention for throwing snowballs.

On a positive note, the band, orchestra and choir concerts were fantastic!  All concerts were well attended.  On Sunday, the choir concert was standing room only.  How great it is to see the support of parents and grandparents.  Thank you to our talented musicians and their leaders – Mr. Breza, Mrs. Whittle and Mrs. Homsher.

Thank you, too, for the community support of Mr. Terry Grabill and his family after the loss of their home.  The family is overwhelmed with the financial and emotional support after their house burned down.  It is a blessing to live in a community that helps others in time of need.

We will return to the notes after Christmas break.  To all of you, have a blessed Christmas season.

We just completed a lock-down drill in cooperation with the Fremont Police Department.   As you know, by law we must run practice drills during the school year.  The next time, the drill will be during an unstructured time – ie., before school, during rec time or in between class times.

Hopefully your son or daughter brought home a letter on Wednesday regarding the successful drug search,  In case they didn't, I have posted the letter.

As you know, one of our priorities at FMS is to have a drug-free environment. Each year I schedule a lock-down drug search with the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit.  (Students and staff do not have advance notice of the search). I was present the entire time with Deputy Green and Turbo (the drug dog), along with Officers Hendrie and Johnson. I am pleased to report that no drugs were found.   On the locker that Turbo “hit on”, the culprit was Axe body spray!  While I am grateful for the results, I also realize that we must continue to monitor our school.

Fremont Middle School will continue to promote “zero tolerance” for drugs, cigarettes and alcohol.  Thank you, parents and guardians, for supporting the school district’s drug policy.  If you have any questions or concerns, contact me at 924-8135.  Also, please encourage your child to share any concerns he/she may have.

On another note, before Christmas vacation I have scheduled a lock down practice drill to comply with state mandate. During this drill classroom instruction will cease and students are required to remain silent.  Again, you will receive notice after the practice drill in December has been completed.

As the holidays approach, we have many opportunities to help others in need.  Our Leo Club (Young Lions) has set a goal of collecting 100 pair of used eyeglasses by December 15.  If you have extra glasses, please consider bringing them to our office.
